War and Psychology

Something Libertarians and Objectivists tend to ignore is the simple psychology behind "idolized" politicians and the people. As even Göring did assess during his trials in Nürnberg:

“Why, of course, the *people* don’t want war,” Göring shrugged. “Why
would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that
he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the
common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America,
nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the
*leaders* of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple
matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist
dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.”

There is only one problem in it. In democracies, the people have a certain degree, depending of the shape of democracy, in whether they want a war or not (either through electing of represenstatives or a Plebiscit). There is the rest of it:

“There is one difference,” I pointed out. “In a democracy the people have some
say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United
States only Congress can declare wars.”

“Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”

And this comes from one of the major participants in the NAZI movement (Hermann Göring, Reichsfeldmarschall der Luftwaffe, had been very close to Hitler). It is given that the NAZI were masters in deluding their people and more so in creating a state that is working with and by one "supernatural" Fuehrer. And all their strategies can be applied less or more to the War on Iraq. Bush had said the US is under attack, he has given false evidence and his companions have assaulted the pacificst vehemently.
Even in his final assessment, Göring was right, it works in every country...

New Crisis in Schiavo Case

At first I thought that Governor Jeb Bush was a voice of sanity in the turmoil around Terri Schiavo, which would have been surprising to me given his ancestry. Mr. Bush said:

"I cannot go beyond what my powers are and I'm not going to do it." (seen here)

This is rather an remarkable sentence for a politician who could gain Christian Voters in this case easily. However, it would have meant to disobey a jurisdictional order and thus a constitutional crisis. If he had held dear to his words, I would have gained new respect for Jeb Bush, but he did not.

Instead Mr. Bush showed his cowardice and sneakiness once more. Read the whole case here.

Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo wasn't to be removed from
her hospice, a team of Florida law enforcement agents were en route to seize her
and have her feeding tube reinserted - but they stopped short when local police
told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Miami Herald has learned.

And who were those state agents? Well, guess who is the Chief in Command:

The incident, known only to a few, underscores the intense emotion and
murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that
agencies answering directly to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a
wrinkle in state law that would have allowed them to legally get around the
judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a
judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

Well, I always have too much faith in some people. Perhaps I should give up my good hope for some well-known brothers. All Bushs originate from the same Bush...

Fall Terri Schiavo

ihren Formen voranzutreiben

Bildungsneuland in Deutschland

Was denn nun, Herr Weiß?

.

Eim privater Bildungsträger soll überhaupt keine staatlichen Mittel in Anspruch nehmen dürfen/müssen.

Disturbingly religious

You can see here, how religious fanatics are increasingly subverting science in the country that was a major supporter of science.

I don't understand why there isn't more resistance against those decision pro-religion (or as the fanatics call it, pro-choice). The article is about the decision of Imax cinemas (one of the major chains that show science documentaries) to exclude movies that make reference to the science of biology, which is discredited by evangelics for being untrue and only a thesis. Of course, those fanatics disregard a century full of scientific provable evidence in exchange for a mere believe in some great god.
I think there should be a more vehement debate about this topic, but it seems that the US already lost this war. I am thankful to live in Europe, where such stupidity couldn't happen, although only because we have had the "witch-hunts" and other catholic crimes.
This irrational delusion that had been spread in the US like an epidemic could only happen, because the Republican had the power to surpress all opposition.

Don't try to get me with the argument that this is so some sort of conspiracy theories, because what is different with this theory is that it has examples in reality that are provable.
And I can give you reference to many subversive attempts to spread the believe of god in exchange for scientific education.
I don't have a problem with the "creation" idea in religious classes. There they can tell what they want, because it is the class for the realm of the supernatural.
However, such none-sense should have no part in actual biology courses, because it has no scientific foundation. You have to prove it through in order to be scientific. It is not enough to show up some minor problems with the theory of evolution, which btw are almost solved nowadays.

I could go on about the subversive media managment and manipulation that has led to an intolerant and discriminating America, but it would certainly blow the limits of this essay.

So, my last words: Amen, God-bless America and thanks that I live in Europe...

On Private Notice

Since I am again having to do on Campus and working for my next physics klausur, I won't be doing much the next two weeks.
I will hopefully finish my Second Part on Jeremiah this night or tomorrow, but don't expect wonders, it will be shorter than I hoped.

If anyone out there is reading this (which I doubt after all :P) and happens to be a student in engineering, I'd be gateful if he can give me some good books on the basics of physics (nuclear physic, wave-particle dualism, optics and mechanics), because I happen to be weak on this topic.

Buch Review

Wheel of Time von Robert Jordan), da damit die Essenz verloren ginge.

Losing the touch to reality

This is something Libertarians, Rights and Objectivists claim the left is always doing, while dwelling in a notion of "good intentions". However, it is the Right and with them many Objectivists and Libertarians that lose their touch to objective reality.
I have seen them calling people, who remind them of the connection between the Iraq War and Corporate Warfare or that democracy might not be the same as liberty, liars, leftists and Saddamites. (a word made by Linz from SoloHQ.com)

But isn't it the New Right (including thos right-wing Libertarians and Objectivists, who think that the USA has not suffered under George W. Bush) detached from objective truth and thus reality. More and more libertarians induldge themselves in the same "logical" mindgames as the Republican Right. Logic games are nice, but they have to be backed up with facts, which only can be found in this reality. And this is something that clearly speaks against them.
Let me draw the case, before you poke at me with the stick:

We have a president who thought that sacrificing the liberties of his peoples for protective means that are dubious (against terrorists, they have proven not to be good at all by several standard tests). This president also started two wars, one led against the Taliban and one lead against a secular dictator who wasn't even connected with the Al-Kaida. Now, while the first war might be justified and in all was a good thing (despite the problem with the clan-warfare), the second war certainly is a problem. Bush and his helpers used arguments that were unbelievable and just false (WMD, connection with Al-Kaida) to start and agitate the war. They afterwards justified the war with a reason that could have been accepted as the truth, if they had presented it as the only major reason before the war.
So, he sacrificed the lives of thousand American Soldiers for some alleged greater Democratic good of a nation that didn't want the US to help them. This is altruism in extreme measures and certainly nothing a Libertarian or an Objectivist should partake in.
The war didn't improve the situation at all. The democratic elections in the Iraq have brought a regime to power that is more interested in Theocracy and Iran than the western Democracies/Republics and the so-called Domino-effect has yet to be seen.
Also, there are more terrorists inside Iraq than were before the war and the blood-toll is rising. Now, the US companies (like Halliburton) try to prevent the privatisation of Iraq Oil wells, thus sanctionizing the idea of Corporate Warfare.

One argument, that no leftist, nor reasonable man could refute, said that Bush was above all consistent and true to his words like Regean. Well, this has been proven wrong now. After his first period in the White House, he know send of his Hawks to positions were they couldn't be dangerous (World Bank etc.). He also appeased not only Europeans, but also the Iran regime, which tries to develop a Nuclear Weapon. Bush even considered to give them materials to update their air force (which was subsided by US government a decade ago) and thus give them means to threaten Israel, in order to get the Mullahs of the Nuclear Programm. So, he also showed that he is neither consistent nor following any ideologie. Bush is a Realpoliticians of a category that hasn't been seen since Bismarck and he even stepped into the wake of Mr. Clinton in trying to solve the Middle East Palestinian problem.

So, what is in this to be worth defended by any Libertarian? I find not much and I don't think there is anything at all. George W. Bush is a threat to liberty in the world and at home. Remember the old saying that politicians try to shift importance from domestic to foreign affair, because the home stinks..

Yeah, the old bad companies-card again...

The Spiegel has again published an interview with one of the "New Left"-media gurus. This time it is Cameron Diaz, who analyses the problems of our culture and where they come from.

German article: http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,346963,00.html

Miss Diaz starts her triad against business and the "force" to outer beauty by seeing something obvious, yet intruigingly perceptive: America has lost its foundation, the reasons that made it so special. The US has lost the principle, that everyone may be as he is, as long as he doesn't infringe on the same right of others.
This sense of individuality, she claims has been lost and I agree with her. It is more about conformism in the US than ever before and the patriot-card plays an important role in it.

However, Miss Diaz sees the problem in a different enemy: Big Business (because Big Business is forcing you to buy what it offers, he?)
She says here:

(The United States of Big Business have stolen our individuality).

She then proceeds in her arguments without proving it, not to mention that she herself is part of this business and enjoys every step with those businessmen (why else would she continue on that path?!).
Instead of identifying the very problem, she uses old stereotypes like Big Business. Diaz could have named government and being too patriotic in the wrong sense, too, but she hasn't. And of course, Miss Diaz wouldn't do such a thing, because Democrats stand for Big Government. However, maybe it is unfair against Miss Diaz, but if you start naming a problem, you have to explain why and she doesn't do that, so it is only fair if I critize her for it.

Bush and Anti-Bush

Well, so this is what the Pro-Bushians want him to do?

http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/0,1518,345948,00.html (German)

The USA offers Iran to join the WTO (World Trade Organisation) in return for the End of the Nuclear project. The US even offered to give the Iran access to aircraft utilities.
If this is what most supporters of Mr. Bush want, then I am grateful not to be with them.
I have heard the argument that Mr. Bush is a steady pole in a time of Appeasers and now look at this. I think the argument got refuted by his companions with this very offer.
So, what are the new arguments for the Imperial foreign policy?

I also want to comment on this here:

http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/0,1518,345883,00.html

I think this is the best answer my friends in the private economy could have given to these leftist snobs. They canceled all the contracts between the leftists and themselves. The consequence is that those anti-imperialists and socialists have to look for a new place to set up their "Anti-Bush" propaganda network.
I am deeply critical of many things Mr. Bush does (especially in foreign policy), but I didn't become a socialist. I reject most of their argumentations against the Iraq War and thus I am glad they didn't got a playing-field for their conference.
This is especially good, because there is a difference between their stance towards the Iraq War and the USA and mine.

I am still Minarchist and an advocate of free-market society, while those are mostly socialists or Islamists. Therefore, I am against the way the US conducted the war and the reasons they had for it. Especially, the way they lied to the people. I am a defender of truth and consistency and lying undermines both in a way I deeply detest.
I am against the reasons for the Iraq War, although I advocated and still defend, the Afghanistan War. We know that the Iraq neither had links to Al-kaida, nor WMDs. These were the capital reasons brought up in favor of the war and they were wrong. Finally, Bush picked up the liberty torch as a reason and tried to sell this to the people and he succeeded, but not with me.
I may hate the way it came to this war and I still believe that the US should go out as soon as possible, but I don't want to support or be aligned to anyone talking about putting up a resistance in Iraq. This is the very nonsense and B.S. I hate. I hope I have been understood this time...

60th Anniversary of Tokyo Bombing

At the end of World War II, when Germany was on the brink of surender and the Japanese had lost air and sea superiority to the US navy, the US Air Force started its biggest Air to Ground bombing campaign in World War II with thousands of bombs on Dresden and on Tokyo in Japan. The bombs mostly hit wooden huts and were sometimes combined with explosives that made the job of firefighters extremely dangerous. 100 000s died in this slaughter.

Kenneth R. Gregg (http://www.hnn.us/blogs/entries/10691.html) posted this piece on the last great air assault campaign before the two A-bombs (that didn't slaughter as many Japanese as the fire bombs).

I think this is interesting, because the US always hold high their ideals and the superiority of their society. But whenever they go into a war, they use means that exceed the end. It was the A-Bomb and Carpet Bombing against Civilists during WW II, the Napalm in Vietnam and the Air Assaults on Baghdad and Jugoslawia.
I think the reaction of the Japanese press after the first wave of bombings is very real and more humane than the "exaggerating and arrogant" US press:

Radio Tokyo, on the other hand, termed LeMay's tactics "slaughter bombing" and
the Japanese press declared that through the fire raids, "America has revealed
her barbaric character... It was an attempt at mass murder of women and
children... The action of the Americans is all the more despicable because of
the noisy pretensions they constantly make about their humanity and idealism...
No one expects war to be anything but a brutal business, but it remains for the
Americans to make it systematically and unnecessarily a wholesale horror for
innocent victims."

Now, to compare it to the US press (Times), this piece:

By May 1945, 75 percent of the bombs being dropped on Japan were incendiaries.
Cheered on by the likes of Time magazine-who explained that "properly kindled,
Japanese cities will burn like autumn leaves"-LeMay's campaign took an estimated
672,000 lives.

I don't think that "cities burning like autumn leaves" is a good description of how properly the US Air Force worked. It is as always the US obsession with exaggerated violence that lies beneath the rows of this news item. For a country that should care for individual liberty, this is as bad a wording as one can get. It seems that innocent Japanese are like leaves that have no significance.

This is the same attitude I have seen before the Iraq War and now, when I come to the topic of the war conduct. It is explained away by referring to the phrase "that always happens during wars, you can't avoid it". Well, I can tolerate it when it comes to the 2nd World War, because this war was forced upon the US. But in Iraq, we talk about a voluntary war that has nothing to do with Self-Defence.
Shame on you, Mr. Bush!

P.S.: For those with the argument that it shortened the war and saved US lives. There were no lives to safe, because the Japanese military was at its end only defending its main land and the US never had plans to invade it like in Europe.

Rather than denying this, a spokesman for the Fifth Air Force categorized "the
entire population of Japan [as] a proper military target." Colonel Harry F.
Cunningham explained the US policy in no uncertain terms: "We military men do
not pull punches or put on Sunday School picnics. We are making War and making
it in the all-out fashion which saves American lives, shortens the agony which
War is and seeks to bring about an enduring Peace. We intend to seek out and
destroy the enemy wherever he or she is, in the greatest possible numbers, in
the shortest possible time. For us, THERE ARE NO CIVILIANS IN JAPAN."
So, this is the conduct of human beings? I can understand their hatred, but I don't understand that you can give such a man his free will to bomb everything he wants.

On the morning of August 6, 1945, before the Hiroshima story broke, a
page-one headline in the Atlanta Constitution read: 580 B-29s RAIN FIRE ON 4
MORE DEATH-LIST CITIES. Ironically, the success of LeMay's firebombing raids had effectively eliminated Tokyo from the list of possible A-bomb targets. There was nothing left to bomb.

Nicely done! Erradicated a single city without any resistance of the Japanese Royal Air Force. The father of this strategy LeMay also had his line in history. He was the US Air Force Chief of Staff during the Vietnam War and said this undying words:

"Let's bomb [the North Vietnamese] back into the Stone Age."

And when he was asked about his role in the bombing of Tokyo, he answered:

"I suppose if I had lost the war, I would have been tried as a war criminal. Fortunately, we were on the winning side."

I don't know what further to say to such a "man". So, he was lucky to come away with it?

Survey contests, that US foreign policy is a Non-Mover

Many US critics want to push a war of cultures, a "West vs. Islam". However, a recent survey indicates that it is the total opposite, when you speak with the Muslims in the Middle East countries. (http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,345550,00.html)

Here some excerpts:

The words most associated with the US and the UK were "racist," "aggressive,"
"morally decadent" and "imperialistic" among other uncomplimentary concepts

Or

Indeed, anger is directed squarely toward the US (a country that many feel is
steered by a "Zionist lobby") and the UK. Over 70 percent in the countries
surveyed, with the exception of Lebanon, felt that the US and the UK attempt to dominate countries
through the offer of foreign aid and fewer than two in 10 Egyptians, Syrians and Palestinians see the US as supporting democracy in the region. The US was also seen as a major violator of human rights. France, on the
other hand, a country which steered clear of the Iraq war and which is lauded
for its respectful dealings with the Middle East, came out smelling like roses.

And

Over 85 percent of the population in four of the five countries surveyed
felt that the war against Iraq was an act of terrorism (the exception being
Lebanon where 64 percent felt that way)

"Thus," write the authors of the study, "while the survey reflected the growing
tensions between the Arab world and the West, it does not support the
caricature of an Arab public that fully and uniformly rejects the West
."

So the Conclusion was:

"The current conflict," the study concludes, "is based in deep-seated
frustration with Western, and particularly American, foreign policies
, and a growing distrust of America's underlying regional objectives."

So, I have to reject the notion of many Objectivists, Neocons and Pro-Wars, that the foreign policy of the US is doing well and will spread democracy and freedom. I think they will be surprised by the way those countries will develop. Even to this answer, imo, the survey gave an answer:

Surprisingly, while many in the West are fed on a steady diet of coverage that
plays up "the West versus Islam," those in the Middle East do not see the
current conflicts as being driven by a Muslim-Christian divide. In fact, most
feel the US places little value on religion
.

So, we will soon see a Middle East that will give rise to "demoratic" nations that will adopt the principle of Sharia (may be not as strict as the Taliban, but Saddam refused the Sharia, too) and have a deep hatred against the US. I think this is nothing that would justify an intervention abroad by the US military, nor is it something to applaud (at least not if you are a liberty-loving US citizen).

Guantanamo Bay is becoming empty

It might arouse relief by some and scepticism by others, but it is clearly not what you hoped it would be. The USA has deported "Terrorist-suspects" to its prison camp on Cuba, located near Guantanamo Bay for the last two years. The camp grew until it held around 600 suspects, who never got a law-suit or a call to their lawyer until recently. Those are not terrorists from abroad, but rather US citizens who had made the mistake to know or to be suspected to know Al-Quaeda Terrorists.
Now, the US government seemed to have become aware that this cruel prison, whose only use is to be able to torture without having to answer to US courts, is no longer a secret.
Mr. Bush thinks that reallocating half of the prisoners to countries like Saudi-Arabia, Afghanistan and Jemen, will get them out of the aim of the news media.

Nothing new in Bush country

I just found this little quote of US-war supporter Berlusconi, Prime Minister of Italy:

A staunch ally of US-led war in Iraq, Mr Berlusconi sounded a conciliatory note
saying he was certain Washington had "no intention of evading the truth"

No intention of evading the truth? Huh, pardon me, that's what the Bush administration has been doing since its inauguration four years ago. It is the very thing this government is the best of the best in.

This argument was brought forth by Berlusconi in regard to the "accident" in Iraq, which involved an Italian Secret Service Bodyguard, a former Hostage and a US Patrol. The account of the events varies from the US to Italy in a way that is unacceptable for the Prime Minister. Without reason, so Berlusconi, the US Patrol opened fire on the vehicle, although the driver stop when the flashlight lighted up.

Let's see, whether the Bush administration will finally find the Truth, or continues to evade it.

Sad News for one of my favorites

It is tragic that some really good concepts never make it on-screen, because some Big Enterprises doesn't believe in the concept (he mostly won't understand anyway). This very sad thing happened to one of my favorite Screenwriters and Directors Jay Michael Strazynski. (http://www.jmsnews.com)

The cinema off-spring of his famous Sci-Fi series "Babylon 5" has been frozen for infinite times. He wouldn't have done The Memories of the Shadows anyway, but he would have let in some very talented people. And if the master himself grants this project his blessing, it couldn't be all to be bad.
Sadly, some jerk of Warner Brothers, didn't want to support the project and so it didn't get the proper support it needed.

The full story can be read here, written by the master himself:
http://www.jmsnews.com/msg.aspx?id=1-17288

Here, some interesting excerpts that I want to discuss later:

It's worth mentioning that I, not WB, own the rights to a B5movie. When we were
negotiating the original B5 deal -- by whose termsI will never see a dime in
profit -- the one thing they did let me havewere the movie rights, figuring
they'd never be worth anything in thelong run.
As you can see, Warner Brothers never had the rights to a cinema movie. Perhaps that is why they wouldn't allow any support to be given to the B5-Movie-Makers, because they would have only limited control over the rights and else.

Money shouldn't be the problem, if you believe the words of JMS himself:

That's the great irony of the situation. The criteria told to us rightup front
while we were producing B5 was that each of the series on PTENhad to show a
profit *in that year* in order to stay on the air and berenewed. So we'd have
these meetings with studio heads who werecongratulating us on how much money the show was making for them(again, while we were still making for it), and then
look at me,realize what they'd said, and hurriedly add, "Though technically
we'restill in the red."The show, all in, cost about $110 million to make. Each
year of itsoriginal run, we know it showed a profit because they TOLD us so.
And in one case, they actually showed us the figures. It's now been on theair
worldwide for ten years. There's been merchandise, syndication, cable, books, you
name it. The DVDs grossed roughly half a BILLIONdollars (and that was just after they put out S5, without all of the S5sales in).So what does my last profit
statement say?

We're $80 million in the red.

So, who might be the liar in this game? Even a mathematical no-brainer could calculate 110 Millions out + 500 Millions in is not equal to -80 Million dollar in budget!
Therefore I believe that the studio had some private problems with JMS or the actual team that makes the movie.
Even if they didn't want to give out too much money, the movie could have been made by adding on the surplus of the Income from Babylon 5 (which they knew of and left aside for some "Special purpose" ?!). I think this is the dishonest behaviour of business men today, that gives rise to so many angry hatred. I can partly understand it, because it comes from a justified base.
On the other side, the money is property of Warner Brothers Inc. and this means they can use it on projects totally disconnected from any Babylon 5 project.

Final conclusion: It is a sad death for a probably wonderful cinema project and a wonderful story. Perhaps Warner Brothers will see its mistake and take up the deal some time later. They'd miss a lot of things and even some profit.

http://http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,344538,00.html

abstechen", drohte Mehmet seinen Eltern. Dann schlug er seinen 67 Jahre
alten
