To Stumble the Internet

While stumbling through the internt, I found this piece of quick thoughts.

The first thought is of no interest whatsoever, because it mostly lacks a point and is a mere observation. The second thought, however, is again interesting. Is a police state less dangerous, if the leaders are incompetent. Let's see and take an example from the real world. The Democrats started to establish a nanny state and with it the slow abolishment of privacy. Then, the dumb Democrats with their lovely ignorance got voted out of the house and instead George W. Bush came and he took these tools and manifested a more dangerous police state, because his advisors aren't as incompetent or stupidly naive as the Democrats.

So, I'd say, even if idiots and incompetent leaders were there today, there could be intelligent and malicious leaders in place tomorrow. This just happens in Democracies, because they allow the worst kind of power: Power to the Incompetent and Lowest Denomination.

But let's continue with issue number two. Funny thought, but again, he obviously has not seen tanks driving through deserts. Yes, they get sand particles into their works, but no it is not the sand that is dangerous, but the heat itself. A rocket full of sand couldn't penetrate a well-designed space-warship and so wouldn't hurt the machination. Also, sand particles can only be dangerous to high velocity parts with extreme forces (see bearings f.e.), because there the melting of sand to glas can cause distortions which would be disasterous.

Forth idea, straight out right, imo. Wikipedia is substituting thinking and remembering atm, but this will change with time :)

The level science has sunken to...

Yesterday, realclimate.org finally lost its credibility, not only because they are censoring their comments (unwanted questions and opinions don't appear) and they don't engage into any serious debate with statisticians, but mostly, because they posted crap. The last one was a real no brainer, as anyone with a bit of intelligence could see. Just look here. I have seen a lot of good satire, and I have seen bad satire, but that belongs clearly to the last group.

They compare sun activity and sunspots and their influence of earth climate to the correlation of Republicans in senate and temperature (remember: Amount of pirates and global warming =) ). Sadly, they don't mean it as an all out joke, but rather want to show that this correlation is ridicioulous, because it lacks "physic" background.
However, they are wrong on this one, because a rise in the sun emission "constant" (which is by now rather a variable) does indeed change the amount of that penetrates the athmosphere.
So, there is rather a correlation of this than of republicans in senate. While they are right that the latter doesn't have a physics basis, the first one does at least have a theoretical chance. So, all in all, this is a no brainer that clearly shows that they are not only condescending to fellow research scientists (when they are engineers, f.e.!!!) but that they also don't understand the objection of the sceptics themselves.

If you look closely, you even see that they debunk themselves, because what they try to ridicioule is exactly what they themselves did with the temperature reconstruction...

Another Post on Global Warming

There is a discussion on realclimate.org about the lag between temperature rise and CO2-level rise in the historical records. While some take this as an example, that indeed CO2 is not driving climate, but is only a symptom of global climate change, other's say that it is perfectly explainable and doesn't contradict anything.

However, they do it in a way that makes me think, they don't have any clear evidence, because just saying so doesn't make it so:

On historical timescales, CO2 has definitely led, not lagged, temperature. But in any case, it doesn't really matter for the problem at hand (global warming). We know why CO2 is increasing now, and the direct radiative effects of CO2 on climate have been known for more than 100 years. In the absence of human intervention CO2 does rise and fall over time, due to exchanges of carbon among the biosphere, atmosphere, and ocean and, on the very longest timescales, the lithosphere (i.e. rocks, oil reservoirs, coal, carbonate rocks). The rates of those exchanges are now being completely overwhelmed by the rate at which we are extracting carbon from the latter set of reservoirs and converting it to atmospheric CO2. No discovery made with ice cores is going to change those basic facts.
It's true that today the rate of increase is higher, but are the overall levels truly higher? And most of all, what stopped global warming back then? but let's continue first.

What is being talked about here is influence of the seasonal radiative forcing change from the earth's wobble around the sun (the well established Milankovitch theory of ice ages), combined with the positive feedback of ice sheet albedo (less ice = less reflection of sunlight = warmer temperatures) and greenhouse gas concentrations (higher temperatures lead to more CO2 leads to warmer temperatures). Thus, both CO2 and ice volume should lag temperature somewhat, depending on the characteristic response times of these different components of the climate system. Ice volume should lag temperature by about 10,000 years, due to the relatively long time period required to grow or shrink ice sheets. CO2 might well be expected to lag temperature by about 1000 years, which is the timescale we expect from changes in ocean circulation and the strength of the "carbon pump" (i.e. marine biological photosynthesis) that transfers carbon from the atmosphere to the deep ocean.
However, they even show that CO2 and ICE-sheet albedo are lagging behind and he even establishes that in those times, the critics were right. It wasn't CO2 that drove climate, but rather the sun and the earth's own imperfect course through space. But the crucial point is the following:

While we don't know precisely why the CO2 changes occur on long timescales, (the mechanisms are well understood; the details are not), we do know that explaining the magnitude of global temperature change requires including CO2. This is a critical point. We cannot explain the temperature observations without CO2. But CO2 does not explain all of the change, and the relationship between temperature and CO2 is therefore by no means linear. That is, a given amount of CO2 increase as measured in the ice cores need not necessarily correspond with a certain amount of temperature increase.
In other words they have given up searching for a better explanation in favor of the just fitting of CO2 increases and decreases (albeit lacking a few thousand years). But if it is true that CO2 is lagging behind temperature, than it can't be the root cause of global climate change, but is rather an ampifying fraction of the whole change.
If we consult some basic science knowledge, we know that the albedo (reflectivity) of the earth is another important factor, also a negative feedback would be water-vapour (due to higher temperatures) which would increase because 70% of the Earth are covered with water. This would significantly increase cloud cover and thus cooling the earth by shielding it from sun-light.

However, somehow scientists don't believe in clouds, because they cannot accurately measure them. Or they underestimate those effects that are not perfectly known.

Real Climate and Math

I don't have much time to go into the math of these simple models on realclimate.org, but I have had some thoughts after wading through the simplified math.

Nothing of this is new, since it all merely represents known physics. Although there some uncertainities I have with those models. First, there are these three energy levels, where Ground and Solar are independent:

I. System Earth
II. System Atmosphere
III. System Solar Planet

These are the three energy equations (equilibrium states?) and there are some basic formulae for G and S and :

(IV)
(V)
(VI)

So far, so nice, but then they start to derive the Ground Temperature via (V) in (I), (VI) in (I) and finally (II) in (I) :

Nice, idea, but what if I say that due to their connectivity, I set System (III) in (I):

We now have a dependence of on the Temperature of the atmosphere.

We can further say: and then

So, if we can measure the athmospheric temperature, we already know the Surface temperature, which is only slightly warmer?

Of course, this is a basic model, which is, as they stress, not applicable to Earth, but rather doable in a closed experiment in the lab.

For real models, we also have feedbacks and radiative forcings (Differentials). First of all, their is nothing short of only Greenhouse-Gases in this example. Then, we have multiple atmospheric levels, so we have energy emission on top and bottom of the different layers influencing each other. We have a lot of other influences on the emissivness, like clouds formation, radicals and so forth. This shows that lambda is no constant, but a dynamic variable:

So, lambda is certainly one of the decisive variables in the system, which have the biggest influence (along with the Solar-variable).

So, how do we determine lambda?

Mal guggen was daraus wird =)
