CAFTA and right wing anti-capitalism
However, many so-called Conservatives are opposing this by citing blatant left-wing lies: This will lead to massive out-sourcing, this will lead to the end of US farming and so on.
Those people who always said they will defend the ideals of capitalism and individualism are suddenly opposed to free trade, when free trade starts to be de-nationalized and objective rather than a subjective wealth-creator[2].
They claim that CAFTA will lead to an EU-style central bureaucracy and a common currency. However, this is not true as long as the politicians don't make it come true. European free trade agreements worked for a long time in favor of a minimalist union that only cares about no-borders, no-tolls and unlimited work among the EU members. The socialist EU could only be created by the appeasement of national states to the suprastate. It was a development that derived from socialist policy for a long time.
In fact, it is a racist approach to claim that CAFTA only hurts people. It might hurt the US for a couple of years until it will finally give way to economic growth.
Again we have here the old nationalist arguments against free trade and capitalism:
""CAFTA will be a market for 'turnaround' exports-products shipped south for assembly and then final sale in the U.S.- particularly textiles and semiconductors. Fabric will be sent to the region, stitched into final apparel and home furnishing products, and shipped right back to the United States. That's not traditional job-creating exports at all. Rather than servicing new foreign markets, these 'exports' serve the same domestic market U.S.-based factories once supplied. The only difference: American workers are removed from the equation. Due to Central American turnaround trade that currently exists, the U.S. trade deficit with CAFTA-6 countries rose nearly 60 percent from 1997-2004.""
None of this arguments could examplify for an capitalist or originally conservative point of view. They are all statist and protectionist and show a true ignorance of free trade and capitalism. Out-sourcing often doesn't destroy jobs, because for one job sent to Brasil, there will be at least one job (however different in nature) in the USA. Of course, there would be a moment of transition until the US economy adopted to the new circumstances, but in the end it would be in favor of everyone.
The moral and ethical tragedy of the failure of this bill is the arrogance that keeps third world countries from their path to wealth and out of poverty.
I grant that the way this bill was introduced and bought with favors (accumulating to the said billions of dollar) and that it was far from perfect, but it was a step in the right direction.
However, there is one issue that speaks in favor of contra-arguments: The way the bill was passed.
Ron Paul has said it explicitly and I have commented on it often. However, he leaves aside the morality of the bill, he is quite demonizing on the way the bill was passed. In my opinion, he was right to do so, considering the bribery involved[2].
Now, the people of the US not only have to pay for it, but also get a bill that is virtually not good for anything. The democratic discussion and rearrangement of the bill has been by-passed for the sake of a lot of dollars and more socialism than was necessary[3].

Betreff: Intelligent Design

Todays Curiousity
The Hyperion-Saga by Dan Simmons (or at least the first two novels: Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion) is very elaborate and used many scientific theories of today as a means of practical devices in future (for example, the Hawking drive that was designed upon the Hawking Effect). Mr. Simmons certainly is an environmentally conscious men (as one can see from his books) and perhaps even likes the idea of god, nonetheless his books are wonderfull.
The scope of his writing is amazing and his obsession with Death and Love is truly interesting (and heartbreaking from time to time). He obviously is a fan of John Keats (an Italian poet of the late 18th century) and other famous writers. Also, his little references to other mainstream literature and culture of the last centuries is very charming (like "Somewhere over the Rainbow" from Wizard of Oz or Dying Earth by Jack Vance).
The reason for my entry is this little item by Roderick T. Long about the political system in Iceland :
"Legislative power was vested in the General Assembly (althingi); "
As every reader of Hyperion could tell you, the All Thing is the Democratic Web version of this General Assembly and is it only a coincidence that they sound so much alike?
I don't know, because even the definition is similiar.
Nontheless, have good night out there and I am back to learning TM.

Science and Thalidomide
Again thalidomide or Contergan[1] (as it is known for in Germany) are the center of attention, because many environmentalists and even religious people claim that it proves that science is bogus or wrong on things. However, they make the mistake that science is not wrong on it. It proved by empirical studies that thalidomides have severe effects on human bodies [2]. It was not science that was at fault, but rather the human beings who conducted the tests. They made short-term tests on animals who showed no negative effects. However, the human physiology obviously proved to react otherwise. It is a shame that Grünenthal did not admit their mistake and take full responsibility (but that's the way in Germany, no responsiblity anymore), but this doesn't disprove anything about science.
It is this constant discrediting of science and especially, privately funded science (except it is funding by Good-Doing NGOs) that is so threatening.
First, private science is more safe than government science: no falsely published medicine has killed even remotely the number of people, states have in the last 100 years.
Second: Do-Good science has indirectly caused the death of thousands in Africa[3] and hundred-thousands in the USA and England (you remember eugenics?!).
So, let's not bash science but be more conscious towards science and such errors can be prevent in the future.

Anti-Globalization-Movement and WTO
Sadly, this is true and I can support this claim, albeit for entirely different reasons. While those wackos don't want to abolish the WTO, but turn it around to serve their purpose of global-unionism, my take on it is, that the WTO is indeed not supporting Capitalism, but national Imperialism by allowing Tariffs by the 1st World Nations. While the 3rd World Countries have to open up their markets for our products, we don't allow the same for this (just look at the agriculture market in Europe).
The WTO has a huge share in this development and is still used as a tool by the rich nations. It is a two-pronged attack. First, it serves as a sign of fair trade to the public (see we unite to help all people), second it serves as a tool to keep the 3rd World Countries from coming on the global market.
We conclude from this, that the WTO is neither just nor capitalist nor pro-liberty. In fact, the WTO is a socialist tool to keep a bunch of elite nations in their priviliged position, while stopping third worlders from claiming their fair share of the wealth.
So, Attac doesn't want to abolish the WTO, but to turn it into a World Worker Union, a new socialist tool. On the other side are libertarians who want to abolish the WTO entirely (along with the World Bank) and allow fair free trade for all nations on Earth. So, who do you think is just? Those who want to substitute the evil with the same package for different clients, or those who want to abolish it and give everyone the same rights?

The Fight over Global Warming
Therefore this topic is very important. It also is a topic which is not covered in most libertarian think tanks, or just covered in defense of any big business.
The problem I am concerned most with is global warming and its defenders. Not because I want to evade the issue or to help big business, but because of the danger to science.
The two major critics of the hockeystick, Mr. McIntyre and Mr. Mckitrick, are constantly harassed for their findings, not because they are disproved and outright false, but because their opposition of Mr. Mann et. al.
Of course,t he standard argument goes, those two are economists and not climate scienctists, so what do they know?
This argument holds as long as it is concerned with the pure theories and scientific findings, but it doesn't hold up when it comes to statistics, the hallmark of any economist.
Since I am studying mechanical engineering, I know that statistics is something we scientists are only aware of in the distance. Oh, we can do some gaussian statistics and we are really good when it is about presenting some result that goes along our train of thought, but we often lack the knowledge about the danger of statistics.
Economists and Market-specialists know of the difficulty to forecast a dynamic highly complex thing, especially by reducing it to generalities. And I think that both critics of Mann know their work on statistics. They don't argue about the climate change science or the general natural science, but rather on the way of application and some errors in the math.
So, we have to ask us: Do we believe someone who really knows about statistics, or someone who depends on alignment of his statistics to his other findings?
I think this gives a credible point to the Mann critics and I hope that in the future, other sources see it, too, especially the peer-reviewed journals.
EDITION:
1. please identify any “elemental errors” in my past work.2. Our work has been
criticized in Internet publications. To date, no peer-reviewed article
criticizing us has appeared in print. A submission by MBH to Climatic Change
criticizing our first article was rejected. The Wahl & Ammann submission to
GRL was rejected. This will change shortly since Rutherford, Mann, Bradley,
Hughes et al [2005], which includes some derogatory comments about MM03 in
passing, will be printed shortly. It was edited by Anrew Weaver, a known and
vociferous opponent of our work, so this does not qualify as an independent
valuation by any standard. It does not deal with any matters raised in
MM05a,MM05b which built on our earlier article, thereby falling well short of
full, true and plain disclosure standards.3. we have never “proposed” any
climate reconstruction. This is acknowledged by Gavin Schmidt at realclimate
(see the WSJ comments). We agree that reconstructions using MBH98 methododology
lack “significance”. This includes reconstructions both with and without
bristlecone pines.4. I have never expressed an opinion one way or the other on
whether the current global warming is outside the bounds of natural variation or
whether anthropogenic CO2 is making a material impact on global warming. I
simply tested whether one important study could be verified. I did this for my
own personal interest and with no expectation that anyone would be interested in
the results. Some of the interest in the story has arisen from Mann’s behavior,
as much as from any specific findings, and for that, he has only himself to
blame.- Steve McIntyre on Climate Audit
I don't think that he is the villain or enemy of climate change, who he had been made to in the public. All of his remarks are rather friendly and reasonable and not the kind of weirdo aggressive insults one would think of given his reputation in the Green-Sphere.
I think this post is another argument that shows there is something amiss in the Climate-Science-community and around Mr. Mann.

http://www.realclimate.org/Cicerone_to_Barton.pdf
http://www.realclimate.org/Mann_response_to_Barton.pdf

Musing on in liberty, so long
